Meiasha Gray is a New York-based multi-media artist whose work primarily spans sculpture and performance. Drawing from African diasporic ritual, spiritualism, communion, and celebration, Gray's process is deeply informed by storytelling and research, allowing these themes to shape their material relationships and creative practices.
Gray was a resident artist at Brooklyn Clay, where they developed a body of work for an ongoing commemorative sculpture project. This project draws inspiration from photographs of Daisy Simpson, Gray’s matriarchal ancestor, taken during her 100th birthday celebration, as well as images from the last years of her life. Daisy Simpson's life reflects the broader migration history of Black Americans—specifically those who, like Simpson, were both Black and Indigenous—moving from the South to the North in the early 20th century. This migration narrative has shaped Gray’s exploration of African diasporic spiritual and cultural traditions, focusing on their historical and contemporary resurgence.
Through this research, Gray seeks to uncover the interconnected histories and spiritual practices that have informed and sustained these traditions across generations. Their work is not only a tribute to the cultural resilience found in African diasporic communities but also a pursuit of the hidden or forgotten threads that contribute to the revival of these practices.
In addition to their artistic pursuits, Meiasha Gray has participated in prestigious residencies, including Brooklyn Clay in 2023, Greenwich House Pottery in 2021, and Anderson Ranch in 2019. Their work has been featured at the Jane Hartsook Gallery in New York, The Holland Project Gallery in Nevada, and The Tahoe Gallery at Sierra Nevada College. Gray has also taught at various studios in New York, including Greenwich House Pottery and the 92nd Street Y. They are currently pursuing a degree in Art History at Hunter College, expected to be completed in spring 2025.
